Dental Care That Supports Children’s Unique Needs, Lasting Healthy Smiles
Many dentists in Crofton and the greater Annapolis, Maryland area may say that they treat patients of all ages, including children. However, offices vary in their level of comfort and experience with treating pediatric patients. Here at Bingham-Lester Dentistry, we have considerable experience caring for young patients’ mouths – and we love doing so!
Our dentist, Dr. Vickii Bingham-Lester, sets the tone. She knows the best ways to speak and interact with children as a mother herself. So, they become comfortable with her, the team, and the care provided during routine check-ups. We know how to demonstrate or explain things like professional teeth cleanings or home care techniques in a way that is understood – not scary. We also know that comfortable, relaxed, and happy pediatric patients mature into adults who have positive relationships and experiences with dentistry. Patients who are not fearful or apprehensive about dental visits naturally maintain the necessary professional care for oral health and overall health and well-being.
Good Oral Health Starts in Childhood
Dr. Bingham-Lester encourages parents and caregivers to schedule an appointment for their child as soon as the first tooth erupts or breaks through the gums. Even before the first tooth is visible, she may want to examine your child’s mouth to assure there are no developmental issues that require early intervention.
These first visits are about getting babies, infants, and young kids used to the idea of someone caring for their mouths. They are also about getting parents used to cleaning baby teeth and gums. The “milk teeth” are vital to the proper positioning and development of the permanent dentition. So, they require good care!
One of the biggest threats to baby teeth comes in the form of “baby bottle decay.” Known as early childhood caries, baby teeth may be damaged due to the sugars in fruit juices, milk, and other beverages. When these drinks are placed in bottles to “pacify” fussy babies, the sugars are in contact with developing tissues over a period of time. As your child grows, we can provide healthier, more “tooth-friendly” nutritional recommendations.
Once kids have reached school age, we will continue to see them for check-ups at least once every six months. If patients are at risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, or other oral problems, check-ups will be scheduled more frequently. We can also integrate professional preventive services easily into these visits; for instance, as soon as the premolars or molars erupt, usually around the ages of six or seven, Dr. Bingham-Lester may suggest applying dental sealants. These coverings protect back teeth, which are more decay-prone. Young kids don’t have the dexterity to adequately brush these teeth, and they also have fissures or grooved surfaces that trap food particles.
