Dentist in Gambrills, MD explains the benefits of dental sealants
At Bingham-Lester Dentistry in Gambrills, MD, our mission is to help patients enjoy the many benefits of having healthy teeth and gums. Whenever we recommend a service to patients, we want to ensure that they understand the treatment and the benefits associated with it. Dental sealants are a preventative service that can be very beneficial for children. Below, we’ll explain what dental sealants are and how they help in the prevention of decay.
What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a barrier to decay that plays an important role in preventing cavities. The plastic material is applied in a thin coat over the chewing surfaces of the molars in the back of the mouth. Molars are made up of deep grooves known as pits and fissures that are particularly vulnerable to decay. Even with regular brushing and flossing, these hard to reach areas are susceptible to food debris and plaque buildup that overtime will lead to cavities.
When do we recommend dental sealants?
In most cases, we recommend having sealants placed on the molars and premolars as soon as they erupt in the mouth. Sealants can last as long as ten years, which can significantly cut down on decay during cavity-prone childhood years.
How Sealants are Applied
Having sealants placed on your child’s teeth is a quick, painless in-office procedure. It requires only a few minutes and is often done within the course of a routine dental exam and cleaning. Here are the steps taken to apply dental sealants:
- Teeth are thoroughly cleaned and then dried.
- An etching solution is applied to the chewing surface of the teeth to help ensure the sealant bonds properly.
- The teeth are cleaned and then dried again.
- The sealant solution is painted on the tooth in a thin layer where it will bond and harden.
Taking Care of Dental Sealants
Dental Sealants do not require any special care, but they do need to be checked periodically during routine examinations to look for wear or tear. Patients should continue to practice good oral hygiene of brushing and flossing to continue to protect against tooth decay.
